Some New Work…

I just pushed live some work that has kept me busy for the last few weeks and I thought some of the behind the scenes workings might be worth a share.

Taxonomy 2.0…

A few weeks ago, I quietly launched Taxonomy 2.0. I’ve been meaning to write up a post about it but to be honest I’ve just been really busy working on some awesome projects.

Thankfully too busy to spam the #eecms stream with a new #taxonomy2rocksyourworld hash-tag, or announce LAUNCHING AN OFFICIAL LAUNCH on the forums, or blast some $1 sale via the marketing cannon - or produce any other kind of furore that we’re now accustomed to.

On free add-ons…

I’ve made the decision to start charging for my add-ons listed in the software section of this site starting June 10th.

I’m not particularly stoked to be doing it but I can tell you that the whole ‘open’ model in the ExpressionEngine eco-system does not work, here’s why:

ExpressionEngine users are generally less hesitant to pay for commercial add-ons than to give donations for free software. I’d go as far as to say many are scared of free software. Alongside this is the fact that EllisLab ‘Community Partners’ are clambering over themselves to announce anything with a price tag - they pay little attention to open add-ons and their developers.

For these reasons, I’m going to say now - I’m over it.

New ‘linear style’ for taxonomy:nav…

The latest release of Taxonomy (v1.2.3) is not particularly blog worthy, it contains a couple of nice new features - but one that I’ve been playing with recently is the style="linear" param on the nav tag.

I’m sure there’s going to be a few questions about how to use it so figured I’d do a little write up and post some example code to give folks an idea of how it could be useful.

Taxonomy v1.2 released, some notes & handy tips…

Just pushed an update to the Taxonomy module and thought I’d write a post to outline some of the new features and also share a couple of development tips.

I keep surprising myself with how flexible it really is on some pretty complex builds I’m working on. It’s ‘play nice’ approach with the EE pages module is really making it something special.
